Endometrial changes in surgical specimens of perimenopausal patients treated with ulipristal acetate for uterine leiomyomas
International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology Oct 14, 2018
Nogales FF, et al. – Researchers assessed hysterectomies from 100 patients with leiomyoma treated with ulipristal acetate (UPA) for the first time for UPA-related endometrial changes. They performed an analysis of the distribution of lesions, involution after treatment, and the relationship between type and extent of lesions and dosage. Fifty-one cases showed progesterone receptor modulators–associated endometrial changes (PAEC) focally within cyclic endometria. Only eight cases showed diffuse PAEC, which usually presents differential diagnoses with hyperplasia, and had only occurred during the first 4 weeks following treatment discontinuation. This was independent of the number of cycles administered. The researchers did not observe any correlation between dosage and type and extent of lesions.
