Encephalitis as neurological complication of COVID‐19: A systematic review and meta analysis of incidence, outcomes and predictors
European Journal of Neurology May 17, 2021
Siow I, Lee KS, Zhang JJY, et al. - Via this systematic review and meta‐analysis, researchers sought to determine the incidence, clinical course as well as outcomes of patients who develop encephalitis as a complication of COVID‐19. They included in this study all relevant studies published between November 1, 2019 and October 24, 2020. The average incidence of encephalitis as a complication of COVID‐19 was estimated to be 0.215%. In COVID‐19 cases, the average mortality rate of encephalitis was noted to be 13.4%. According to data, encephalitis represents an uncommon complication of COVID‐19, but its occurrence in COVID‐19 patients was associated with significant morbidity and mortality. A higher risk of developing encephalitis as a complication of the infection was observed in severely‐ill COVID‐19 patients.
