Emergent vs urgent ERCP in acute cholangitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Dec 06, 2019
Iqbal U, Khara HS, Hu Y, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers examined how emergent vs urgent biliary drainage in acute cholangitis influence patient outcomes. Searching the Embase and PubMed databases from inception to April 2019, they included nine observational studies involving 7534 patients in the primary meta-analysis. They observed significantly lower in-hospital mortality (IHM) among patients who underwent emergent biliary drainage within 48 hours. Outcomes here support performing emergent ERCP within 48 hours in patients with acute cholangitis as it is linked with lower IHM, 30-day mortality, organ failure, and shorter length of stay.
