Emergent complication of assisted reproductive technology: Clinical analysis of 17 pregnant women with adnexal torsion
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Nov 04, 2019
Sun Y, et al. - In this study, researchers appraised the clinical symptoms, surgical management, and outcomes of pregnant women with adnexal torsion due to assisted reproductive technology. An assessment of a total of 17 patients with adnexal torsion was performed. Of these, 8 patients conceived by in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, 1 by artificial insemination, and the other 8 conceived naturally after ovulation induction. They reported occurrence of about 14 in the first trimester of pregnancy, 1 case in the second trimester, and the other 2 in the third trimester. Observations suggest that in adnexal torsion, women experience acute onset of lower abdominal pain with or without nausea and vomiting; it seldom occurs during pregnancy. However, an increase in its incidence has been reported, which has been related to the wide application of assisted reproductive technology. Better results could be achieved with early diagnosis and treatment.
