Emergency transarterial embolization in postoperative hip bleeding: Indications, techniques, and results in a retrospective cohort
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 21, 2018
Lanza E, et al. - The effects of transarterial embolization (TAE) in the setting of postoperative bleeding following hip surgery were studied in this retrospective cohort study. Experts concluded that in stopping the bleeding of the hip region TAE was safe and effective and ought to be performed early, in order to avoid irreversible ischemic damage. For confirming the doubtful evidence of ongoing bleeding, multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) could be used. Several embolic materials could be used, each one offering different advantages. They observed low complication and mortality rates. In cases where postoperative bleeding of the operated hip was detected, TAE seemed to be the ideal first-line intervention.
