Emergency department to ICU time is associated with hospital mortality: A registry analysis of 14,788 patients from six university hospitals in The Netherlands
Critical Care Medicine Oct 20, 2019
Groenland CNL, Termorshuizen F, Rietdijk WJR, et al. - Using data from the Dutch quality registry National Intensive Care Evaluation, researchers carried out a retrospective observational cohort study to ascertain if emergency department to ICU time was correlated with hospital mortality. Between 2009 and 2016, adult patients (n = 14,788) admitted to the ICU directly from the emergency department in six university hospitals were involved. Findings suggested an association of prolonged emergency department to ICU time (> 2.4 hr) with increased hospital mortality after ICU admission, mainly driven by individuals who had a higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation IV probability. Findings suggested that rapid admission of the most critically ill patients to the ICU could decrease hospital mortality.
