Emergence of uterine fibroid driver mutations in perturbed myometrial stem cells: The role of hypovitaminosis D

Fertility and Sterility Sep 09, 2017

Elkafas H, et al. - The ability of Vitamin D3 to increase DNA repair capacity in reprogrammed (pre-exposed) MSCs is ascertained in this study. This information supports the ability of vitamin D3 to reverse developmentally EDCs-induced DNA damage in myometrial stem cells. As hypovitaminosis D is rampant in African American women (AA), these outcomes recommend a novel mechanism by which lack of vitamin D might be contributing to the higher prevalence of UF in AA and also propose a potential preventative approach against UF utilizing vitamin D.
