Emergence of antibiotic resistance across two-stage revision for periprosthetic joint infection
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 19, 2021
Ludwick L, Chisari E, Wang J, et al. - For managing chronic hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), the preferred treatment option includes both surgical intervention and antibiotic treatment as part of a two-stage revision. The clinical records of 142 patients who underwent a two-stage revision for a chronic culture-positive PJI were retrospectively reviewed with the aim to determine the frequency of developing a subsequent antibiotic-resistant infection among these patients. Resistance to antibiotics emerged in only 10 of the 142 patients (7.04%) across their two-stage revision. Overall findings suggested no major emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms in patients undergoing two-stage exchange arthroplasty and antibiotic treatment in the given cohort.
