Prevotella intermedia and periodontitis are associated with severe asthma

Lopes MP, Cruz AA, Xavier MT, et al. - In this case-control study, researchers assessed the levels of periodontal pathogens Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the subgingival biofilm of people with and without severe asthma. The sample consisted of 457 people (220 with asthma and 237 without asthma). This investigation was carried out at the Program for Control of Asthma in Bahia Clinic located in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Between periodontitis and severe asthma, statistically significant positive associations have been observed. In association with the presence of severe asthma, high levels of P. intermedia have been discovered.
