PINK1 overexpression promotes cell migration and proliferation via regulation of autophagy and predicts a poor prognosis in lung cancer cases
Cancer Management and Research Aug 27, 2020
Lu X, Liu QX, Zhang J, et al. - Due to its association with tumor development, researchers analyzed PINK1 (PTEN induced kinase 1, Park6) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) for its clinical worth as well as molecular mechanism. They used 87 paired NSCLC tissues to ascertain the levels of PINK1. They also assessed expression and prognosis of PINK1 by using Oncomine and TCGA databases. As per the findings of a survival analysis in 1,085 NSCLC patients, a relationship was identified between low PINK1 expression levels and significantly longer overall survival. PINK1 expression was identified as an independent predictor of overall survival in NSCLC cases, in univariate and multivariate analyses. In NSCLC cell lines (A549 and H1975), the impact of PINK1 deficiency was also assessed, with findings showing significant suppression of migration capability and cell viability, and a significantly raised apoptosis ratio. In NSCLC, experts suggested a possible role for PINK1 as a potential therapeutic target and prognostic biomarker.
