Helicobacter pylori and low-dose aspirin ulcer risk: A meta-analysis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Dec 21, 2018
Sarri GL, et al. - Via performing literature screening through the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases from inception to May 2018, researchers determined whether (and by how much) Helicobacter pylori infection alters the baseline risk of peptic ulcers during low-dose aspirin (LDA) therapy. A total of 10 cross-sectional and 7 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis. According to results, H. pylori infection may increase the risk of LDA ulcers by ~70% in a population where individuals take proton pump inhibitors and/or other acid suppressants. The risk almost doubles without anti-secretory drugs. Overall, these findings support the use of a test-and-treat approach for LDA users with H. pylori infection, especially those with a higher risk of peptic ulcers.
