Aspergillus sensitization in bronchial asthma: A separate phenotype
Allergy and Asthma Proceedings Jan 08, 2020
Rajagopal TV, Kant S, Verma SK, et al. - Among prospectively enrolled patients with bronchial asthma (n = 57), researchers carried out an evaluation for Aspergillus sensitization as well as for its influence on asthma control, given positive skin reactions to Aspergillus fumigatus in people with atopic asthma is 10 to 20% but a causal link is still to be established. They found good control of symptoms in most of the patients (57.89%) and partial control in 14.04%. Only 28.07% of the patients had uncontrolled symptoms. They also reported a higher proportion of patients with uncontrolled symptoms among those who were sensitized (45.00%) vs those who were not sensitized (18.92%). Findings revealed a link of asthma severity with fungal sensitization, with sensitization to Aspergillus as a component of the pathogenesis. Also, a significant link of Aspergillus sensitization with bronchiectasis was evident, even in the absence of clinical characteristics.
