Ellipsoid zone change according to glaucoma-stage advancement
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 18, 2018
Ha A, et al. - Authors conducted a retinal photoreceptor ellipsoid zone (EZ) intensity comparison between normal eyes and those with different stages of glaucoma. They employed image processing software to quantify the intensity of the first and second hyper-reflective bands corresponding with the external limiting membrane (ELM) and EZ. According to spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), findings suggested the occurrence of relative EZ intensity reduction in the mild-to-moderate and severe glaucoma stages. In the inner segments of photoreceptors, mitochondrial changes occur during the course of glaucoma progression.
