Elite athletes have longer telomeres than sedentary subjects: A meta-analysis

Experimental Gerontology Feb 19, 2019

Abrahin O, et al. - In this meta-analysis, researchers examined how high levels of physical activity (in elite athletes) and sedentary lifestyle influence telomere length. After study selection, nine articles met inclusion criteria. The investigators noted longer telomeres among elite athletes (n=306) with experience in national or international competitions vs sedentary individuals (n=322), which suggested a possible protective effect of high level chronic physical training on telomere length. They did not identify any risk of publication bias in the studies that reported differences in means on the analysis of the funnel plot.
