Eliminating unnecessary opioid exposure after common children’s surgeries

Harbaugh CM, Vargas G, Streur CS, et al. - Researchers intended to gain insights into patient-reported opioid consumption and pain following pediatric operations to guide opioid prescribing. For pediatric opioid prescribing, the most frequent indication is acute pain following surgery or injury. However, variability has been seen in the prescribing. An increase in opioid-related overdoses by 250% was noted from 1999 to 2016 among children and adolescents.
