Elevated visceral obesity quantified by CT is associated with adverse postoperative outcome of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for renal clear cell carcinoma patients
International Urology and Nephrology Apr 05, 2018
Zhai T, et al. - In patients treated with unilateral laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for stage I–III renal cancer, the association between CT measures of visceral obesity [visceral fat area (VFA)>100 cm2, BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2] and short-term postoperative outcomes was examined. In this retrospective study, elevated visceral obesity by VFA was shown to be related to increased surgical complexity, postoperative morbidity, postoperative stay and hospitalization expenses for renal clear cell carcinoma (RCCC) patients. Moreover, this may provide a better assessment of renal cancer outcome than BMI. VFA may be a useful index for the evaluation and calculation of RCCC aggressiveness.
