Elevated serum uric acid levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction in HIV patients receiving highly-active antiretroviral therapy

Pirro M, et al. - Whether serum uric acid (SUA) levels were related to endothelial dysfunction in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients receiving highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) irrespective of metabolic syndrome (MS), was investigated in this cross-sectional study. A significant impact of MS was seen on SUA levels in HAART-treated HIV infected patients. A negative association between SUA and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation was noted, that was found to be independent of MS only for elevated SUA levels.
