Elevated liver stiffness is linked to increased biomarkers of inflammation and immune activation in HIV/hepatitis C virus-coinfected patients

AIDS May 18, 2018

Medrano LM, et al. - Among HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients, researchers evaluated the relationship between liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and biomarkers of T-cell activation, bacterial translocation, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy. They studied 238 HIV/HCV-coinfected patients, 32 healthy controls, and 39 HIV-monoinfected patients and identified an increase in T-cell activation, bacterial translocation, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy with the severity of liver fibrosis in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients. This was particularly noted in patients who had LSM at least 40 kPa.
