Elevated blood pressure and risk of aortic valve disease: A cohort analysis of 5.4 million UK adults
European Heart Journal Sep 18, 2018
Rahimi K, et al. - In this cohort study, researchers determined whether elevated blood pressure (BP) levels were a risk factor for aortic valve stenosis (AS) or aortic regurgitation (AR) using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models in 5.4 million patients residing in the United Kingdom with no known cardiovascular disease or aortic valve disease at baseline. Researchers identified an increased risk of AS and AR in relation to long-term exposure to elevated BP levels across its whole spectrum. A 41% higher risk of AS and a 38% higher risk of AR was observed in relation to each 20-mmHg increment in systolic BP level. Associations were stronger in younger patients; however, no strong evidence for interaction by sex or body mass index was reported.
