Elevated blood alcohol impacts hospital mortality following motorcycle injury: A National Trauma Data Bank analysis
Injury Oct 10, 2019
Ahmed N, et al. - In patients ≥ 18 years of age who sustained injury following a motorcycle crash, researchers assessed the effect of elevated blood alcohol concentration (BAC) on outcomes. From 2012-2014, the National Trauma Data Bank data was accessed. Among 113,843 motorcycle crash patients, 67,183 patients had BAC testing. Investigators found that the majority (68.52%) tested negative, 21.14% tested positive above the legal limit and the remaining 10.34% tested with a BAC < 0.08 g/dl. Hospital mortality rates among alcohol negative and alcohol positive groups were 3.1% vs 3.9 %, respectively. Compared with patients who tested negative, those who tested with a BAC above the legal limit sustained a higher injury severity score and higher in-hospital mortality.
