Electronic cigarette use in US households with children: The “New” Secondhand Smoke
JAMA Pediatrics May 10, 2019
Carwile JL, et al. - In this investigation, researchers analyzed the prevalence of households with children exposed to secondhand aerosols. Non-users are widely perceived as safe by electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) aerosols. These aerosols, however, contain potentially harmful compounds, including nicotine, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and ultrafine particulates, to which non-users may be exposed by inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact with exhaled aerosols in the environment. The US Office of the Surgeon General has recommended banning the use of e-cigarettes in confined areas in order to avoid likely harm due to secondhand exposure.
