Electronic cigarette use and myocardial infarction among adults in the US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 12, 2019
Bhatta DN, et al. - Via cross-sectional analysis of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Wave 1, researchers evaluated the link between e-cigarette use and having had a myocardial infarction (MI). They also performed longitudinal analysis of Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Waves 1 and 2 to determine if the observed cross-sectional link between e-cigarette use and MI can be explained by reverse causality. Increased risk of having had a myocardial infarction was observed in relation to some-day and every-day e-cigarette use, this was observed after adjusting for combustible cigarette smoking. Compared to conventional cigarettes, similar influences were induced by e-cigarettes. A greater risk was noted in relation to dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes at the same time vs use of either product alone.
