Electronic cigarette use among young, middle-aged, and older adults in the United States in 2017 and 2018
JAMA Oct 24, 2019
Bao W, et al. - Given that electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are used by millions of Americans. Using E-cigarettes, some people may quit smoking, but some others, including susceptible populations, such as young people, may be encouraged to start smoking. Researchers here sought to present the updated data on adult e-cigarette use including 2018 and measured the changes between 2017 and 2018. Among US adults, current use of e-cigarettes declined from 2014 to 2017 (weighted prevalence: 2014, 3.7%; 2015, 3.5%; 2016, 3.2%; 2017, 2.8%) despite an increase in the number of people trying e-cigarettes. As per recent reports of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US middle school and high school students indicated a startling rise in e-cigarette use between 2017 and 2018, reversing the previously observed decline since 2015. The recent popularity of pod-based e-cigarettes, such as the Juul brand, may at least be partly contributing to this observation.
