van den Berg JF, et al. - This systematic review was performed to summarize the scientific literature on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for agitation and aggression in dementia. The authors concluded that with few adverse consequences, ECT could be an effective treatment for severe and treatment-refractory agitation and aggression in dementia. However, further prospective studies were required to substantiate these preliminary positive results, due to the substantial risk of selection bias, the designs of the studies reviewed and their small number.
