Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings in muscular dystrophy patients with heart failure
Heart and Vessels May 25, 2018
Ogiso M, et al. - Researchers compared the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings between muscular dystrophy (MD) patients (mean age at diagnosis of MD 41.1 ± 18.7 years; males 64.2%), who were hospitalized for heart failure (HF- the HF group) vs MD patients who were not hospitalized for HF (the non-HF group). A significantly wider QRS duration and QTc interval was detected at the time of HF hospitalization in the HF group vs the non-HF group. Furthermore, a significantly lower left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction and significantly larger diastolic LV dimension and left atrial diameter were shown at the time of HF hospitalization by the HF group vs the non-HF group. Overall, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic abnormalities were reported with the occurrence of HF in MD patients. For the detection of cardiac involvement in these patients, early recognition of abnormal findings during a regular electrocardiographic or echocardiographic follow-up may be useful.
