Electroacupuncture or auricular acupuncture for chronic musculoskeletal pain among cancer survivors
JAMA May 28, 2021
Mao JJ, Liou KT, Baser RE, et al. - Via this randomized clinical trial (PEACE trial: Personalized Electroacupuncture vs Auricular Acupuncture Comparative Effectiveness), it was investigated whether electroacupuncture or auricular acupuncture decrease chronic musculoskeletal pain among cancer survivors. This study involved 360 adults with a prior cancer diagnosis but no current evidence of disease, who stated musculoskeletal pain for at least 3 months, and self-reported pain intensity on the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst pain imaginable). They were randomly assigned 2:2:1 to electroacupuncture (n = 145), auricular acupuncture (n = 143), or usual care (n = 72). Findings showed a greater pain reduction was achieved with electroacupuncture and auricular acupuncture, compared with usual care. However, relative to electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture was not noninferior and it was associated with more adverse events.
