Electrical cardioversion for atrial fibrillation in the emergency department: A large single-center experience
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Feb 08, 2020
Fried AM, et al. - In a 5-year cohort of ED patients that underwent electrical cardioversion for atrial fibrillation, researchers investigated the safety and outcomes of electrical cardioversion. In this retrospective health records survey, they obtained data from 887 patients for inclusion in this analysis. In 781 (88%) encounters, electrical cardioversion was successful. Remarkably few serious complications were observed. There were three major complications (3/887; 0.3%; one postcardioversion stroke, one jaw thrust maneuver for hypoxia, and one overnight observation for hypotension) and 123 minor complications (123/887; 14%). Outcomes suggest ED electrical cardioversion followed by discharge to home as extensively safe and effective.
