Elective surgery for diverticular disease in US veterans: A VASQIP study of national trends and outcomes from 2004 to 2018
American Journal of Surgery Sep 11, 2020
Napolitano MA, Sparks AD, Randall JA, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed data of patients undergoing elective surgery for diverticular disease using the VASQIP database from 2004 to 2018 in order to determine trend towards minimally invasive surgical approaches and postoperative complication rates in the Veterans Health Administration. They divided the 15-year time period into 3-year increments to determine changes over time. Elective colon resection was performed on 4,198 veterans for diverticular disease. Analysis revealed improvement in 30-day outcomes, and an increase in the use of laparoscopy, over time. Outcomes were thus similar for veterans to that observed in the civilian sector.
