Elderly males with or without existing osteoporotic vertebral fracture have much lower future vertebral fracture risk than elderly females: The MrOS (Hong Kong) year-4 follow-up spine radiograph study

Osteoporosis International Dec 07, 2019

Wáng YXJ, Che-Nordin N, Deng M, et al. - According to Genant’s vertebral deformity (VD) criteria and endplate or/and cortex fracture (ECF), spine radiographs of 1,500 Chinese males with baseline and year-4 follow-up were assessed in order to record MrOS (Hong Kong)’s year-4 follow-up, and the contrast outcomes with the MsOS (Hong Kong) study. Among the three ECF0 groups, a meaningful variation in new ECF incidence, with VD0/ECF0 being the least and VD2m/ECF0 being the greatest, was noted. Findings revealed that VD progression/new VD is much less prevalent in old men vs old women. Moreover, a greater risk of developing ECF was observed in vertebrae with VD.
