Eight‐year follow‐up of modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
The Laryngoscope Dec 18, 2020
Sundman J, Browaldh N, Fehrm J, et al. - This prospective intervention study was undertaken to determine if modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remained effective after 8 years. Sixty-five OSA patients were given re‐evaluation with polysomnography and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale 8 years after UPPP. At the 8-year follow-up, the dropout rate was 28%. In selected patients, modified UPPP was effective as long‐term therapy for OSA, although the impact on the apnea-hypopnea index decreased over time. Even in the long term, daytime sleepiness remained improved. A reduced long-term respiratory outcome was predicted by a high BMI at baseline and a rise in BMI.
