Eicosapentaenoic acid therapy is associated with decreased coronary plaque instability assessed using optical frequency domain imaging

Clinical Cardiology Apr 20, 2019

Konishi T, et al. - The impact of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) therapy on coronary plaque instability in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) was investigated in this study. Researchers retrospectively analyzed data from 121 consecutive PCI patients, including 109 untreated (no-EPA group) and 12 patients treated with EPA (EPA group). They analyzed OFDI data from 60 patients. They detected significantly lower mean lipid index and macrophage grade but higher mean minimum fibrous cap thickness in the EPA group vs the no-EPA group. Patients undergoing PCI displayed decreased plaque instability in relation to EPA therapy.
