Efficiency of arthrocentesis treatment for different temporomandibular joint disorders
International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Sep 20, 2019
Polat ME, et al. - In three groups of patients with different temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), researchers sought to determine if arthrocentesis therapy has different results. A clinical trial included 45 patients with 45 unilaterally affected joints divided into three groups (n = 15): osteoarthritis (OA), disc displacement with reduction, and disc displacement without reduction (DDWoR). According to findings, estimating mean changes between baseline and long-term follow-up disclosed important variations in joint sounds, disruption in daily activities, maximum mouth opening, and protrusive movement between the groups. In patients with all three types of TMD, arthrocentesis therapy can be helpful to improve clinical symptoms and range of mandibular movement. However, in individuals with DDWoR, the advantage of arthrocentesis may be higher than in the other groups.
