Efficacy of vaptans for correction of postoperative hyponatremia: A comparison between single intravenous bolus conivaptan vs oral tolvaptan
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jul 24, 2018
Rajan S, et al. - In this prospective randomized study, researchers compared single-dose intravenous conivaptan to oral tolvaptan therapy with respect to efficacy in correcting hyponatremia in patients (aged 20–70 years) who had undergone major head and neck surgeries with a serum sodium level of ≤130 mEq/L and were symptomatic. Findings revealed that both the therapies were safe and effective in correcting hyponatremia in postoperative patients. They also observed faster sodium correction with effective aquaresis in patients treated with conivaptan. This finding implied that conivaptan could be considered superior.
