Efficacy of subthreshold newborn phototherapy during the birth hospitalization in preventing readmission for phototherapy
JAMA Pediatrics Mar 08, 2018
Wickremasinghe AC, et al. - This research was pursued in order to evaluate the efficacy of subthreshold phototherapy for newborns with total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels from 0.1 to 3.0 mg/dL below the appropriate American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) phototherapy threshold during the birth hospitalization in preventing readmissions for phototherapy. Additionally, experts sought to determine the predictors of readmission for phototherapy. It was discovered that the subthreshold phototherapy during the birth hospitalization was effective in preventing readmissions for phototherapy. Nevertheless, for each readmission prevented, phototherapy was warranted by several newborns who would otherwise not need it.
