Efficacy of steroid-eluting stents in management of chronic rhinosinusitis after endoscopic sinus surgery: Updated meta-analysis
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 08, 2019
Goshtasbi K, Abouzari M, Abiri A, et al. - Via performing a systematic literature search of PubMed for articles published between 1985 and 2018, researchers tested the effectiveness of steroid-eluting stents (SES) in improving postoperative outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Seven of the 76 published studies were included for a collective cohort of 444 SES and 444 control sinuses, all of which were industry-sponsored. According to aggregate evidence, SES can improve ESS outcomes by reducing postoperative intervention rates and recurrent polyposis and inflammation, while encouraging frontal sinus ostia (FSO) patency. Data reported that collective mean differences for FSO/ethmoid inflammation and FSO diameter were −10.86 mm and +1.34 mm, respectively. Both included and analyzed studies were sponsored by industry, so bias in the publishing of ruling-outs was not necessary. Future independent, non-sponsored studies are warranted in order to further evaluate the long-term effectiveness of SES.
