Efficacy of simvastatin plus metformin for polycystic ovary syndrome: A meta- analysis of randomized controlled trials
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Dec 04, 2020
Meng J, et al. - Researchers compared simvastatin plus metformin vs metformin monotherapy in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), via this meta-analysis. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified from PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases explored through June 2020. Experts analyzed five RCTs. They found significant decreases in total testosterone, leuteinizing hormone: follicle stimulating hormone (LH:FSH) ratio and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in relation to combined treatment with simvastatin plus metformin vs metformin monotherapy for PCOS. It was concluded that a better treatment strategy for PCOS is combined treatment with simvastatin plus metformin vs metformin alone as evidenced by significantly decreased total testosterone, LH:FSH ratio and LDL cholesterol.
