Ageing Research Reviews May 28, 2021
Hsu TW, Stubbs B, Liang CS, et al. - Via this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers assessed efficacy of serotonergic antidepressants in treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and agitation in patients with dementia. Relevant randomized controlled trials were selected from PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library. This analysis involved 14 eligible randomized controlled trials (n = 1,374; mean age = 76.8 years; mean proportion of female = 61.9 %). According to findings of this meta-analysis, alleviation of overall NPS, agitation, depressive symptoms, and care burden, as well as improvement of cognitive function, both were effectively conferred by serotonergic antidepressants.
