Efficacy of prophylactic dexmedetomidine in preventing postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia in pediatric cardiac surgery patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Paediatric Anaesthesia Jun 16, 2018
Ghimire LV, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from studies comparing dexmedetomidine to placebo to assess its efficacy when administered perioperatively as prophylaxis for junctional ectopic tachycardia in pediatric patients following cardiac surgeries. Secondary outcomes were bradycardia, hypotension, intensive care unit stay, total hospital stay, inotropic scores, and total mechanical ventilation time. The analysis included seven studies (5 prospective randomized studies and 2 retrospective case-controlled studies) with a total of 1,616 patients. Findings revealed that, in pediatric patients undergoing surgery for congenital heart diseases, a reduced incidence of postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia without significant increases in adverse events was achieved effectively with the administration of prophylactic dexmedetomidine.
