Uchino M, et al. - The efficacy of oral antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients undergoing surgery for Crohn disease is investigated in this randomized controlled trial. Researchers randomly assigned 335 patients with Crohn disease who were scheduled to undergo intestinal resection with an open approach either to received both preoperative oral antibiotics and intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis, or to received intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis alone. Outcomes support administering combined oral and intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients with Crohn disease to prevent surgical site infection.
