Efficacy of perineural vs systemic dexamethasone to prolong analgesia after peripheral nerve block: A systematic review and meta-analysis
British Journal of Anesthesia | Aug 11, 2017
Baeriswyl M, et al. – Analgesic efficacy of dexamethasone following peripheral nerve block was assessed when administered via perineural vs systemic route. Findings offered moderate evidence that compared to systemic dexamethasone, perineural dexamethasone combined with bupivacaine, but not ropivacaine, slightly prolongs the duration of analgesia, without altering other pain–related outcomes. As per observations, injection of perineural dexamethasone should be cautiously balanced in light of the off–label indication for this route of administration.
