Efficacy of Narrow Band UVB with or without OMP in stabilization of vitiligo activity in skin photo-types (III -V): A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, prospective, multicenter study

Esmat SM, El-Mofty M, Rasheed H, et al. - In cases of vitiligo for which corticosteroids are contraindicated or immune-suppression is unjustified, NB-UVB affords the only well-established vitiligo therapy that can be employed solely. Nonetheless, together with corticosteroids, it not only expedites response but also improves compliance.
A multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, prospective study of 64 patients with active non-segmental vitiligo (vitiligo disease activity ≥2) who were randomly assigned to either NB-UVB and placebo (NB-placebo) or NB-UVB and dexamethasone OMP therapy (NB-OMP) for 6 months.
The NB-OMP group had earlier control of disease activity but it was comparable in both groups by the end of the study span.
Both groups showed an impact of disease activity prior to therapy on control of activity.
Therefore, NB-UVB was identified to be a safe sole treatment option in vitiligo management.
NB-UVB efficiently allows repigmentation, and represents a comparable stabilizing option to systemic corticosteroids in spite of slightly delayed control.
