Efficacy of interventions for amblyopia: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

BMC Ophthalmology May 29, 2020

Li Y, Sun H, Zhu X, et al. - Using data from 23 studies with 3,279 candidates, the researchers adopted the network meta-analysis (NMA) techniques combined with latest randomized controlled trials to provide more guidance for the treatment of amblyopia. There may be differences in clinical efficacy among different treatments for amblyopia but the available data could not be readily confirmed. Traditional patching regimens are possibly more effective than atropine according to the rankings, unless atropine is used in conjunction with sound eye suppression. And the introduction of activities seems to improve the patching effect. The NMA demonstrated that the efficacy of most of the amblyopia treatment modalities examined was comparable, with no significant difference. In order to establish their effectiveness with a greater degree of credibility, further large-scale , high-quality clinical trials are warranted.
