Efficacy of EGF and gelatin sponge for traumatic tympanic membrane perforations: A randomized controlled study
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Aug 09, 2018
Lou ZC, et al. - Authors ascertained the outcomes of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and gelatin sponge patch treatments for traumatic tympanic membrane perforations. The closure time of traumatic tympanic membrane perforations was reduced with the daily application of EGF and gelatin sponge patching vs spontaneous healing. A higher closure rate and shorter closure time were seen with EGF treatment but it resulted in otorrhea. On the contrary, the closure rate was not improved or otorrhea was not caused with gelatin sponge patches but repeated patch removal and reapplication were required. Therefore, according to the requirement of the patient, appropriate treatment should be selected.
