Efficacy of corticosteroids in prevention of acute kidney injury in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Apr 25, 2018
Jahnukainen T, et al. - Whether corticosteroids can prevent cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) related acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonates undergoing heart surgery, was determined. plasma concentrations of interleukins 6 and 10 were assessed as well as the correspondence of the interleukin concentrations with AKI was analysed in neonates who were randomized to receive 2 mg/kg methylprednisolone followed by hydrocortisone infusion 0.2 mg/kg/h perioperatively with tapering doses for 5 days, or placebo administered in a similar fashion. Corticosteroids triggered significantly reduced inflammatory reaction, which neither attenuated the incidence of AKI defined by KDIGO classification nor decreased the rise of AKI biomarkers in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery.
