Efficacy of computer-based telephone counseling on long-term adherence to strength training in elders with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized trial
Arthritis Care & Research May 17, 2019
Baker K, et al. - Researchers conducted a 2-year, single-blind, parallel-arm, randomized, controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of the Boston Overcoming Osteoarthritis through Strength Training Telephone-Linked Communication (BOOST-TLC) program—a novel telephone-based, motivational, strength-training, exercise-adherence counseling intervention—in improving adherence to a strength-training exercise program over 2 years. From knee osteoarthritis patient registries, community newspapers, and online websites, the investigators screened and included eligible individuals aged ≥ 50 or older who had painful knee osteoarthritis and had the ability to use a telephone. They randomized 104 participants; of these, 89 (44 control, 45 TLC) completed the 24-month follow-up. Participants in the exercise program showed no increase in adherence to strength-training exercise, even with frequent motivational telephone reminders.
