Efficacy of bronchial thermoplasty in patients with severe asthma
Journal of Asthma Oct 23, 2019
Madsen H, et al. - Whether bronchial thermoplasty (BT) affords a safe as well as an effective option to treat adults with severe, refractory asthma in clinical practice, was investigated in this prospective, single-center, open, observational study. Participants were suffering uncontrolled asthma and/or frequent exacerbations despite therapy with at least high dose inhaled corticosteroids plus a second controller. Among participants, alteration from baseline 4, 8, 12 and 24 months in FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC ratio, asthma control questionnaire (ACQ) score and asthma quality of life score (mini-AQLQ) were assessed as efficacy results. This study enrolled 16 patients, comprising 9 males. The median age of the study sample was 50 years and 14 participants were followed for 24 months. In this population of adults with severe asthma, the consequences of treatment with BT included improved ACQ, mini-AQLQ and lung function, however, an increased frequency of unscheduled doctor-visits and rescue courses of oral corticosteroid and antibiotics were also reported in relation to BT.
