Efficacy of brief intervention for harmful and hazardous alcohol use: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of studies from low middle‐income countries
Addiction Jun 26, 2021
Ghosh A, Singh P, Das N, et al. - A systematic review intended to confirm a qualitative and quantitative synthesis of studies of brief interventions for harmful and hazardous alcohol use in low and middle-income countries. Researchers assessed differences in intervention and control groups on risk-scores using standard screening instruments, the frequency of heavy drinking, the drinking risk-level, or quality of life and other mental health-related outcomes. The research enrolled a total of 14 studies, seven of them from South Africa. The outcomes of this research illustrate that brief interventions for alcohol use demonstrate some promise in low- and middle-income (LAMI) countries. Particularly, a single session, nurse-delivered brief intervention for harmful and hazardous alcohol use seems to indicate a small but significant positive effect in LAMI countries.
