Efficacy of blended collaborative care for patients with heart failure and comorbid depression

JAMA Sep 03, 2021

Rollman BL, Anderson AM, Rothenberger SD, et al. - Outcomes from this randomized clinical trial of patients with depression and heart failure revealed correlation of blended collaborative care for heart failure and depression with improvement in mental health–related quality of life (mHRQOL) and mood more than usual care, and mood more than collaborative care for heart failure alone.

  • A total of 629 patients with depression and heart failure were randomized.

  • Either blended collaborative care, collaborative care for heart failure alone, or usual care were provided to the participants.

  • At 12 months, relative to participants receiving usual care, patients receiving blended care reported significantly better mHRQOL and mood and relative to receiving care for heart failure alone, receiving blended care linked with better mood but not mHRQOL.

  • The three groups showed similar physical function, rehospitalizations, and mortality, at 12 months.
