Arthroscopy Nov 23, 2020
Forsythe B, Lavoie-Gagne O, Patel BH, et al. - This study was undertaken to conduct a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in order to ascertain which interventions optimize clinical outcomes in adhesive capsulitis. Researchers performed a systematic review of all clinical trials on adhesive capsulitis published since 2008 including a total of 66 studies comprising 4,042 shoulders (57.6% females, mean age 54.8 ± 3.2 years). The results illustrated that there was not one treatment that emerged superior in regards to the range of motion, pain symptoms, and functional status. After the failure of conservative treatment, surgery ranked highest across all ROM domains. The results exhibited that treatments that ranked highest for treatment of pain included PT supplemented with either medications or ultrasound. This study’s findings revealed that treatments ranked highest for improvements in functional status included MUA, PT with medical therapy, surgical intervention, PT with ultrasound, PT with injection, and injection alone.
