Efficacy of anti-inflammatory treatment on major depressive disorder or depressive symptoms: Meta-analysis of clinical trials
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Mar 08, 2019
Köhler-Forsberg O, et al. - Researchers identified 36 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published prior to January 1, 2018, investigating antidepressant treatment effects and side effects of pharmacological anti-inflammatory intervention in adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) or depressive symptoms for this systematic review. NSAIDs were investigated in 13 RCTs (N=4,214), cytokine-inhibitors in 9 RCTs (N=3,345), statins in 7 RCTs (N=1,576), minocycline 3 RCTs (N=151), pioglitazone in 2 RCTs (N=77), and glucocorticoids in 2 RCTs (N=59). Patients with MDD display improvement in depressive symptoms on receiving anti-inflammatory agents as add-on and as monotherapy when compared to placebo. Response and remission improved in correlation with the anti-inflammatory add-on. These findings support improved antidepressant treatment effects with anti-inflammatory agents.
